Brew Off

Last weekend, I was invited to a Brew-off. Local physicists who are also amateur beer brewers, all brought their latest brew to a nearby public park, and we all got to sample them and vote on our favorite. I loved this because
A) I got to go to a place in Boulder that was not Snarfs or Chelsea's house
B) There were a bunch of people my age
C) These people were all smart and fun to talk to
D) There were no kids, but lots of happy, joyful dogs
E) I'm not much of a drinker, so just a sip to taste test each of the beers was just my speed.

There were a lot of people there.

Each tank of brew was labelled with a different physics symbol. Several I did not know.

This was my cup with notes on my thoughts for each of the brews. Who can name the symbols for 1, 2, & 3?? (1st, 2nd and 3rd place according to me...still don't know who won overall)

Kinda like this, 'cept different.

I realize this post is a bit old, but I was just seeing what you were up to and found this (apparently) open question that I happened to know: 1. is the Del Operator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Del), 2. is "approximately equal to" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approximation#Mathematics) and 3. is a closed line integral (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_integral#Complex_line_integral). I hope you're having a good time in Guatemala, and maybe I'll see you when you're in the Bay Area!
